Despite posting a sign prohibiting concealed carry, customers and employees at an Aldi’s grocery store in Milwaukee were saved when someone with a CCW permit stopped an armed robber who was wielding a shotgun. Aldi’s has not reversed its anti-gun policy.

Milwaukee, Wis. — A Milwaukee man will not face any charges after shooting a robbery suspect at a Milwaukee grocery store after an armed robber began waving a shotgun around, according to reports.

In fact, despite the Aldi’s store being posted against concealed carry,  Milwaukee County’s district attorney praised his actions and no charges have been filed.

Nazir Al-Mujaahid told 12 News that when he saw a man holding up a sawed off shotgun threatening a cashier in Aldi’s, he felt justified in drawing and shooting his concealed carry handgun.

Al-Mujaahid said he’d only had his permit a short time before the incident took place.

“There was a gentleman behind him. I nodded him to get out of the way. Thank God he saw and got out of the way, and that’s when I had to fire at the gentleman,” Al-Mujaahid said.  He fired six or seven times and made it clear Friday that he stands by his actions.

“The guy dropped the shotgun, dropped the bag of money, and people were safe. That’s the most important thing, and I’m not suffering any consequences for practice my constitutional right,” Al-Mujaahid said in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story.

Reaction to the self-defense shooting was overwhelming positive. “Now this is why we needed conceal carry and now have it,” wrote Bob Wateski at wisconsingunowners.org. “It could have been a dead store clerk or some other person if not for this man having his pistol on him and willing to use it to protect another.”

According to one witness, Aldi’s reacted by moving the weapons prohibited signs but failed to remove them. “That Aldi is in my neighbourhood, wrote one commenter. “They posted the no guns sign again but this time in the inside door. Not outside where it would be most observed initially.

“Guess the next time a shooting happens, collateral damage must take place before common sense takes place.”

The Journal story reports that Al-Mujaahid did not see the no-CCW sign when he entered the store.

“The surveillance video showed he acted reasonably and in a controlled manner,” District Attorney Chisholm said in the Journal story. “He disrupted an act that potentially exposed himself and others to death or great bodily harm. And under the unique facts and circumstances of this case, it would not be appropriate to charge him with any potential crimes or ordinance violations.”

From Grocery Shopper to Advocate

After being overwhelmed with support over his actions, Al-Mujaahid is spreading the word about concealed carry through a new website he’s launched at ccwadvocates.com.

The site talks about his experience and challenges users to discuss their self-defense plans.

He told 620 WTMJ that, “I think of having to draw my weapon.  I think of the cashier.  I think of the robber getting agitated, waving his gun around,” said Al-Mujaahid.

Meanwhile, the two robbers involved in the Aldi’s holdup have been arrested. Both had a history of violent crime and armed robberies in the area.

I agree on concealed weapons! There are too many people ,who should have the right too conceal a weapon.Police go through go thru intensive training!

  2. Al Mueller says:

YES! YES! YES! Now let me yell. THIS IS WHY WE HAVE THE SECOND AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES!! MAY WE ALL BE SAFER FROM NOW ON!!

Look out criminals. WE, the Citizens of Wisconsin, are now armed and WE ARE WATCHING YOU!

  3. Bob Wateski says:

NOW THIS IS WHY WE NEEDED CONCEAL CARRY AND NOW HAVE IT. IT COULD HAVE BEEN A DEAD STORE CLERK OR SOME OTHER PERSON IF NOT FOR THIS MAN HAVING HIS PISTOL ON HIM AND BE WILLING TO USE IT TO PROTECT ANOTHER. THANK YOU SIR.

  4. J.D. Lesnick says:

a big thanks to all those who worked so hard to make cc a reality. …

  5. Dan Cramer says:

+1 for the Second Amendment!!! Good Job! I wonder if the Aldis store will tear down their “NO WEAPONS ALLOWED” sign? What would the outcome had been if Mr. Al-Mujaahid had seen the sign and turned around and walked away?!!? The outcome could have been tragic. This article should be sent to all of the anti-gun businesses who have posted “NO WEAPONS ALLOWED” signs.

That Aldi is in my neighbourhood….. they posted the no guns sign again but this time in the inside door. Not outside where it would be most observed initially.

Guess the next time a shooting happens, collateral damage must take place before common sense takes place.

  7. John Belke says:

I CERTAINLEY HOPE THAT THIS WILL OPEN ALDIS EYES AS FAR AS NOT ALLOWING CCW IN THEIR STORES NATION WIDE. I WOULD ASK ALL WHO HAVE CCW NEAR AN ALDIS TO GET SOME CARDS THAT EXPLAIN WHY THEY SHOULD CHANGE THEIR STORE POLICY. WGO HAS THEM.

  8. Kiwi the Geek says:

Yes, I bet that cashier was really thankful the guy didn’t see the “no weapons” sign!

  9. rodney junakin says:

Wow! It was a GOOD thing that a responsible,law-abiding,CW permit holder was there to foil that crime. There have been TOO many stories of defenseless persons killed or wounded because the crooks don’t want to be I.D.-ed after robbing everyone,so they shoot them. For once,in this state, the tables were turned on the crook. Now these businesses that ban concealed firearms by legit permit holders will maybe change their policies. After all, the bad guys will ignore the signs anyways.

  10. Dan Bath says:

This jackass cowboy could have killed several people shooting at a would be robber that had no rounds in the guy. This wanna be tough-guy attitude is irresponsible and demonstrates not only a low IQ but a machismo similar to the limp dick drive a sports car bravado that I find quite a joke.

  11. Richard says:

Aldi is owned by a German company. They will remain anti-self defense until the day they go out of business. Thankfully, carrying concealed in a posted business is only a ticket for trespass, and only after they notice and ask you to leave and you fail to comply. Good for him!

  12. Scott Schoemann says:

It’s jackasses like YOU who are the reason we have to arm up to go to the grocery store… so do us all a favor and grow a pair and stop showing us how brave you are behind a keyboard

  13. Scott Schoemann says:

Aldi Still has not lawfully posted their stores to comply with the State Law which specificly states the sign MUST be on the EXTERIOR entrance DOOR… Its as if the local management has posted it in a manner they KNOW does not comply with the requirements, so that the people with CCW licenses can protect their employees… Remember when a violent crime is just seconds away a cop is MINUTES away…

  14. Ted Quam says:

Dan, I’m sure your attitude would have been much different if you were the cashier or one of the threatened patrons in that store. The criminals would most likely not have attempted to rob the store if there had been a police officer standing in there. Why? Because the police officer has a gun, and will use it as necessary. If citizens have guns and will use them as necessary, that can provide the same deterrent. There are only so many police officers, and they can’t be in every location to prevent every crime. Also, this “jackass cowboy” did not injure or kill any bystanders, but rather exercised gun safety 101 by knowing the target and what’s beyond.

  15. Ted Quam says:

If only they knew how many customers they have actually lost by their policy. I am one of them.

  16. Ron S says:

Just received an e-mail from Kandi King customer service rep for Aldi, confirming that Aldi now supports all states laws regarding CCW. I was in the Aldi store at Packard Plaza and noticed that the anti weapon sign was removed and replaced with something else with n o mention of weapons in the store. I e-mail Aldi for verification and was e-mailed back. Apparently Aldi changed their corporate policy regarding CCW. Glad to hear it.

  17. Ron says:

I was in the Aldi located in Cudahy, WI at Packard Plaza and noticed that their posted weapons ban sign was missing. I e-mailed customer service for verification at Aldi.com and was informed by their customer service Rep that Aldi’s now follows all states with concealed carry laws and does not prohibit CCW in their stores.

  18. Daniel Theiler says:

I will make it a point to shop at Aldi’s, even though I probably won’t be exercising my right to carry. I will be telling my friends to patronize Aldis also. Aldis is a true friend of ours. They are also setting a great example to other stores.
