Constitutional Carry: Is Wisconsin ‘Open for Business?’

Governor Scott Walker did everything in his power to ram through right-to-work, signing it  into law. Regardless of your views on that issue, the question gun owners want to know is, will he—and a GOP majority in both state houses—do the same on Constitutional Carry for Wisconsin?

“Protecting and preserving our constitutional freedoms is one of the most important things a governor can do. The Bill of Rights forbids the government from infringing on the freedoms unique to America, but that hasn’t deterred politicians who want to treat the Second Amendment as optional and strip us of the right to keep and bear arms. I will fight these attempts to get around the U.S. and Wisconsin Constitutions and I will strive to protect our rights today and for future generations.” — Scott Walker    (Source: scottwalker.com)

After taking credit for ramming right-to-work legislation through the state legislature and then signing it into law amidst widespread opposition and controversy, Governor Scott Walker declared Wisconsin “Open for Business.”

But regardless of what you think about labor issues, grassroots gun owners want to know: Is Wisconsin ‘Open for Business’ on Constitutional Carry?

As you know, Constitutional Carry simply means the right to lawfully carry a concealed weapon without any government permission slip. It means no Department of Justice criminal background check to exercise your inalienable right to bear arms. It means no database of gun owners, which can be trolled by DOJ agents. It means no fees, no swarms of bureaucrats to employ.

Simply put, it means more freedom for you.

But we don’t really know where Governor Walker stands on this issue. He has repeatedly refused to answer WGO’s candidate survey, leaving gun owners in the dark.

So far this session, states with legislatures that are weighted with far fewer republicans have managed to introduce Constitutional Carry bills, so it’s entirely possible the institutional gun lobby is holding things up (we all know they have a vested interest in permit-to-carry).

Scott Walker decries “politicians who want to treat the Second Amendment as optional and strip us of the right to keep and bear arms.” Gun owners can agree with him on that, but now is the time for the Governor to take action and swing Wisconsin’s GOP majority into swift action when the GOP has the votes to improve our concealed carry law.

Here is my recent letter to him, followed by an urgent call to action I hope you’ll take immediately.

Governor Walker:

The members of Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc. (WGO) – and a national coalition of like-minded pro-gun organizations – urgently need to know if you support moving Wisconsin to a constitutional carry model, making concealed carry-by-permit optional for purposes of reciprocity with other states only.

Under constitutional carry, no permit, fee, redundant background check or other red tape would be imposed in order to lawfully carry a concealed weapon for personal protection. Nationally, and here in Wisconsin, gun owners seek not only your position on constitutional carry, but whether you will do everything in your power right now to urge the legislature to action on this issue.

While WGO does not take a position on labor or right-to-work issues, your action on that recent law change demonstrated that you can and will move for change even in the face of opposition … if you want to.

For gun owners in our state, constitutional carry is the single most telling litmus test of your true attitude toward the Second Amendment. Given your national ambitions, nationwide gun owners will be watching closely both your response to this letter, and your action – or lack thereof – following.

Warmest regards,

Corey Graff
Executive Director
