Thanks to the support of the members of Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc. (WGO), pro-gun businesses can now boldly show their support for concealed carry by posting one of WGO’s new Pro-CCW signs. It’s part of the Wisconsin gun rights organization’s pro-concealed carry campaign.

The signs are part of what WGO calls its DEFEND WISCONSIN PROGRAM, in response to the anti-gun signs being posted by some businesses around Wisconsin to prohibit concealed carry. It also aims to counter the anti-gun smear campaign of the Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort (WAVE), the notorious Madison-based anti-gun group. That organization launched a statewide campaign called SAFE WISCONSIN, which allegedly encourages businesses to post NO WEAPONS signs. In a direct mail letter sent to donors, WAVE wrote:

A ‘dangerous new law allowing the carrying of concealed, loaded weapons in public … Reckless, dangerous legislation.’ ‘Pro-gun extremists’ acting with a ‘blatant disregard for the impact their recklessness has on people’s lives.’ – Jeri Bonavia, Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort

However, according to WGO, businesses duped by this rhetoric are adopting an unsafe policy, which keeps out the very people with the means to deter crime. That was evident recently when an armed robber wielding a shotgun invaded an Aldi’s grocery store in Milwaukee — a business that prohibited concealed carry. Thankfully, someone was in the store who had not seen the sign and was carrying a handgun. That individual, Nazir Al-Mujaahid, shot several times at the robber causing the suspect to flee. Both suspects were later apprehended.

“What’s at stake here isn’t just a goofy anti-gun policy that inconveniences gun owners with carry permits,” said Corey Graff, Executive Director of WGO. “What’s on the line is the creation of a statewide network of dangerous Criminal Safe Zones where everyone is forced to be defenseless. That’s why we’re providing these signs to businesses — to show the public that guns carried by good guys is a good thing, that self-defense is not something we’re ashamed of.”

Last fall, WGO launched its successful Don’t Buy List Program, which to date has listed over 800 anti-gun businesses around the state. These businesses are put on alert that gun owners will no longer patronize them until the signs are removed. To date, nearly two dozen businesses have reversed course and removed the signs, thanks to grassroots pressure from vigilant members of WGO.

The WGO Pro-CCW Signs feature the words NOTICE: PRO-CCW PROPERTY. Below that a paragraph notifies visitors: “Concealed carry by law-abiding gun owners on this property is welcomed and encouraged. The owners recognize the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution’s Bill of Rights and Section 25 of the Wisconsin Constitution enumerating the right of the people to keep and bear arms for self-defense. You are entering a Criminal Free Zone.

Action: How Do I Help Distribute the Pro-CCW Sign?

We need your help to fund this program. There are two ways you can help distribute signs: You can make a general donation, which will allow us to provide signs for free to businesses. We will send a sign(s) directly to a business.

Or, you can order as many signs as you like, which we’ll send to you as free premiums, when you contribute at the donation levels listed here. We will send the sign(s) to you to post with the business owner’s or management’s permission.

WGO on Milwaukee's Police Chief Flynn and open carry ...

Milwaukee, Wis. – The head of Milwaukee’s police force — notorious anti-gunner Chief Ed Flynn — is demanding changes to Wisconsin’s new concealed weapons law, changes that will seriously infringe the rights of gun owners. This despite the fact that the new law has not caused any problems but has in fact begun to thwart crime.

Even so, Flynn and Milwaukee bureaucrats are determined to concoct problems out of thin air that don’t exist in order to begin to dismantle lawful CCW and turn Wisconsin into a guilty-until-proven-innocent Stalinist state.

One of the so-called proposed “improvements” to Wisconsin’s CCW law would ban anyone with three misdemeanor convictions in five years from obtaining a permit.

However, as Nik Clark of Wisconsin Carry, Inc. pointed out in a recent Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story, “There’s a whole bunch of things that are misdemeanors,” Clark said. “Some of them I don’t think are things that should preclude people from having the right to self-defense. There’s a protester in Madison. He’s protesting Governor Walker and he gets a ticket for obstruction. That’s a misdemeanor. Let’s say someone is very active politically and they want to go protest but when they do so three times — you know, politically active season here in Milwaukee and in Madison — and three times someone gets a disorderly conduct or a disturbing the peace, or any of those misdemeanors.”

Joel Plant, chief of staff with the Milwaukee Police Department, also claimed that anyone who was not convicted of a misdemeanor due to a plea bargain from an original felony charge should not be able to carry a gun.

And, lastly, anti-gun proponents want to increase the penalty for someone carrying without a permit from a misdemeanor to a felony. “The sanctions they face are not significant,” Flynn said. “No matter how many times they are caught with that gun, the charge is a misdemeanor. It’s a misdemeanor for the first offense, it’s a misdemeanor for a 10th offense. That’s why I say they’re more afraid to get caught without their gun than with their gun.”

This last draconian measure would make Constitutional Carry — carry with no permit — a felony.

“Has Chief Flynn ever read the Constitution he swore an oath to uphold and protect?” asked Corey Graff, executive director of Wisconsin Gun Owners (WGO). “Instead of going after criminals who run rampant throughout Milwaukee, Chief Flynn is going after an easier target: law-abiding gun owners.”

According to Graff, WGO is lobbying to improve Wisconsin’s concealed weapons law by modeling it after Alaska’s system. They say legislators will begin work soon to revise the law making carry by permit for Wisconsin residents optional for those who want one for reciprocity with other states requiring a permit.

But for Wisconsin residents the permit will not be required. “As long as you may legally own and possess the gun, you’ll be able to carry it,” Graff added.

Aldi’s has not reversed its anti-gun policy.

Milwaukee, Wis. — A Milwaukee man will not face any charges after shooting a robbery suspect at a Milwaukee grocery store after an armed robber began waving a shotgun around, according to reports.

In fact, despite the Aldi’s store being posted against concealed carry, Milwaukee County’s district attorney praised his actions and no charges have been filed.

Nazir Al-Mujaahid told 12 News that when he saw a man holding up a sawed off shotgun threatening a cashier in Aldi’s, he felt justified in drawing and shooting his concealed carry handgun.

Al-Mujaahid said he’d only had his permit a short time before the incident took place.

“There was a gentleman behind him. I nodded him to get out of the way. Thank God he saw and got out of the way, and that’s when I had to fire at the gentleman,” Al-Mujaahid said. He fired six or seven times and made it clear Friday that he stands by his actions.

“The guy dropped the shotgun, dropped the bag of money, and people were safe. That’s the most important thing, and I’m not suffering any consequences for practice my constitutional right,” Al-Mujaahid said in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel story.

Reaction to the self-defense shooting was overwhelming positive. “Now this is why we needed conceal carry and now have it,” wrote Bob Wateski at wisconsingunowners.org. “It could have been a dead store clerk or some other person if not for this man having his pistol on him and willing to use it to protect another.”

According to one witness, Aldi’s reacted by moving the weapons prohibited signs but failed to remove them. “That Aldi is in my neighbourhood, wrote one commenter. “They posted the no guns sign again but this time in the inside door. Not outside where it would be most observed initially.

“Guess the next time a shooting happens, collateral damage must take place before common sense takes place.”

The Journal story reports that Al-Mujaahid did not see the no-CCW sign when he entered the store.

“The surveillance video showed he acted reasonably and in a controlled manner,” District Attorney Chisholm said in the Journal story. “He disrupted an act that potentially exposed himself and others to death or great bodily harm. And under the unique facts and circumstances of this case, it would not be appropriate to charge him with any potential crimes or ordinance violations.”

From Grocery Shopper to Advocate

After being overwhelmed with support over his actions, Al-Mujaahid is spreading the word about concealed carry through a new website he’s launched at ccwadvocates.com.

The site talks about his experience and challenges users to discuss their self-defense plans.

He told 620 WTMJ that, “I think of having to draw my weapon. I think of the cashier. I think of the robber getting agitated, waving his gun around,” said Al-Mujaahid.

Meanwhile, the two robbers involved in the Aldi’s holdup have been arrested. Both had a history of violent crime and armed robberies in the area.

Wisconsin residents have overwhelmed the state Justice Department with so many concealed weapon permit applications agency officials say they probably won’t meet deadlines for issuing approvals this month despite pulling dozens of employees from other tasks to help.

MADISON — Wisconsin residents have overwhelmed the state Justice Department with so many concealed weapon permit applications agency officials say they probably won’t meet deadlines for issuing approvals this month despite pulling dozens of employees from other tasks to help.

A state law that allows Wisconsin residents to carry concealed weapons went into effect Nov. 1. Under the law, state residents 21 or older who submit $50 to the Justice Department, pass an agency background check and prove they have received some firearms training can obtain a permit to carry.

The law requires the agency to process applications received before Nov. 30 within 45 days. Any applications received after that date must be processed within 21 days.

As of Dec. 28, DOJ had received 64,832 applications, issued 36,373 permits and denied 800, mostly because addresses applicants submitted didn’t match their addresses in state Department of Transportation records, DOJ spokeswoman Dana Brueck said.

DOJ Law Enforcement Services Division Administrator Brian O’Keefe said the agency has received anywhere from hundreds to thousands of applications in a single day. He said the agency likely will need one to two extra days beyond the 45- and 21-day windows to get permits processed for several weeks starting early this month.

“It’s been a tremendous task for DOJ to try to keep up,” O’Keefe said. “We’ll always try to do what the law mandates we do … (but) we’re going to have a two-week period where we’re below the limits.” Read more

Brown County lawmakers voted Wednesday to ban concealed handguns in three county buildings, after workers expressed "fears."

Brown County lawmakers voted Wednesday to ban concealed handguns in three county buildings, but don’t look for metal detectors or special patrols to be added anytime soon.

Concealed carry still will be permitted in several other county buildings, and at special events including the annual county fair.

Signs will be posted prohibiting people from carrying guns in the Brown County Community Treatment Center, the Sophie Beaumont Building (which houses much of the Human Services Department) and the county Shelter Care offices, all in Green Bay. The ban will go into effect once the county has been able to publish the new regulation, a process likely to take at least several days.

Sheriff’s deputies don’t have any immediate plans for aggressive enforcement of the ban, Sheriff John Gossage said shortly after the vote. He said officers currently respond when concerns are raised that someone might have a weapon in the buildings or might plan to bring one, and that the policy won’t change.

Concealed carry will be permitted at two other facilities in Green Bay: the Northern Building — the county’s main office complex and site of the board’s committee meetings — and at the Agriculture and Extension Facility. It also is permitted at special events.

A Wisconsin law that went into effect Nov. 1 allowed individuals with the proper permits to carry concealed weapons in public, though not in locations such as courts and police stations. It gives municipalities and private-property owners the ability to prohibit concealed weapons if certain notices are made to the public. Most communities in northern Brown County have made it illegal to carry concealed weapons into government buildings. Exceptions are Green Bay, which doesn’t restrict concealed-carry. Hobart prohibits it at the village office building. Read more

Five gun owners unlawfully detained by the Madison Police Department for open carrying in a Culver's restaurant were vindicated following a lawsuit in federal court.

Wisconsin Carry and Madison 5 Awarded $10,000 judgment against City of Madison/Madison PD

On September 18, 2010 five law-abiding Wisconsin residents were peacefully having dinner at a Culver’s Restaurant in Madison, Wisconsin. These five individuals, who were legally openly carrying as provided by Wisconsin law, had finished their dinner and were preparing to leave the restaurant when they were unlawfully detained by a mass of Madison police officers.

Despite the absence of reasonable suspicion or probable cause of any crime or violation, Madison police illegally demanded identification from the men under the threat of arrest if they did not comply.

Two individuals who chose not to comply with the illegal action of the Madison police were subsequently arrested and cited for obstruction. Two days later, those unlawfully-issued citations were rescinded and all five men, even those who complied with the officers illegal demands, were issued citations for disorderly conduct.

On May 5th of 2011, the frivolous disorderly conduct charges against all five men were dropped.

Wisconsin Carry, Inc. filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Madison and the five Madison Police officers who participated in the unlawful detainment and treatment of these five individuals. A copy of that lawsuit is available here:

http://www.wisconsincarry.org/pdf/Madison5/lawsuit.pdf

The judgment of $10,000 against the City of Madison and five Madison police officers was agreed to by Wisconsin Carry, Inc. and their 5 co-plaintiffs. This judgment will be entered into the record of the Federal District Court, Western Wisconsin.

A copy of the judgment agreement can be viewed here:

“Wisconsin Carry will continue to employ and “all of the above” approach to advancing and protecting the right to carry in the manner of one’s choosing in Wisconsin,” the group said in a press release. “Included in those methods are lawsuits, grass roots legislative activism, public education/awareness, free concealed weapon license training, and every other effective measure.”

Thanks to our friends at Georgia Gun Owners for sharing this shocking video.

WGO reported in early 2011 that NRA’s Wayne LaPierre had expressed his support for left-wing Democrat Senator Harry Reid.

NRA leaders never denied that; instead they pointed out the fact that the NRA did not officially endorse Reid (that’s true).

But …

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again — there is an alternative to the “inside-the-beltway” institutional gun lobby.

Gun owners like you don’t have to be a part of a political organization focused on gaining access to politicians, and subsequently selling you out.

That’s why Wisconsin gun activists have been flocking to the 100% no-compromise message of Wisconsin Gun Owners (WGO).
