WGO Analysis and Highlights from the NRA Press Conference 12/21/12
Good:
- NRA leadership correctly identified the lack of armed response in schools. WAYNE LAPIERRE: “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”
Bad:
- Failed to call for armed teachers (at the 1999 NRA Annual Convention, Wayne Lapierre said: “First, we believe in absolutely gun-free, zero-tolerance, totally safe schools. That means no guns in America’s schools, period, with the rare exception of law enforcement officers or trained security personnel.”)
- Refused to mention “concealed carry”
- Failed to strongly state ownership of semi-automatics protected by the Second Amendment
- Advocated increased police presence rather than armed citizens in schools: WAYNE LAPIERRE: “I call on Congress today, to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation.”
WGO Analysis and Highlights of Wayne Lapierre’s Appearance on Meet the Press 12/23/12:
Good:
- Stated opposition to high-capacity mag ban. DAVID GREGORY: “You wouldn’t support any reduction of capacity magazines?” WAYNE LAPIERRE: “We don’t think it works and we’re not going to support it.”
Bad:
- Failed to call for armed teachers (Wayne Lapierre at the 1999 NRA Annual Convention: “First, we believe in absolutely gun-free, zero-tolerance, totally safe schools. That means no guns in America’s schools, period, with the rare exception of law enforcement officers or trained security personnel.”)
- Refused to mention “concealed carry”
- Advocated Project Exile (report “Illegal Guns” national stasi-like snitch system, with 100% prosecution – enforcing unconstitutional gun law rather than repealing it)
- Admitted NRA pushed unconstitutional Brady Checks (NICS)
- Advocated stronger NICS system and more integration with mental health records (read, “Why NRA is Nuts to Expand Background Checks“)
No Mention of Armed Teachers
Scary: NRA Calls for National Mental Records Database
“We have no national database of these lunatics. The records are not even in the system…we’ve got a completely cracked mentally ill system that’s got these monsters walking the streets.”
NRA Backs Sarah Brady’s Unconstitutional Background Check System
DAVID GREGORY: Isn’t part of the issue background checks? You have 40 percent of the sales that go on without any background checks, are you prepared to back broader background checks?
WAYNE LAPIERRE: We have backed the National Instant Check System, we have backed putting anyone adjudicated mentally incompetent into the system … we have supported prison building. We have supported Project Exile, where everytime you catch a criminal with a gun, a drug dealer with a gun, a violent felon with a gun, you prosecute them 100 percent of the time… we’ve supported the instant check system, we’ve supported getting these records into the instant check system.
Lapierre Admits NRA Supports Gun Free School Zones (Criminal Safe Zones)
WAYNE LAPIERRE at the 1999 NRA Annual Convention: “First, we believe in absolutely gun-free, zero-tolerance, totally safe schools. That means no guns in America’s schools, period, with the rare exception of law enforcement officers or trained security personnel.”

Take Action
1. Sign the Online Petition Against the Semi-Auto Ban
2. Join, Renew or Make a Donation to Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc. (WGO). With the Second Amendment in grave danger following the chilling exploitation by gun control proponents of the tragic Newtown shooting, and the very real danger that the institutional gun lobby could sell out before the fight begins, your support of Wisconsin’s Only No-Compromise Gun Rights Organization is more critical now than ever before.
Please consider chipping in $10, $25, $50 or more to this pro-gun fight.
