WI: Republicans Sneaking Cops-Only Carry Bill

Assembly Bill 9 would give law enforcement officers special privileges not granted to the lowly citizens whom they serve – including the ability to carry on private property where CCW is prohibited!

Republican State Rep. Joel Kleefish is ramming a bill through the legislature that will grant police officers — active duty, off-duty and retired — an exemption to access private property prohibiting concealed carry while they are armed.

So when a business or property owner posts his or her premises against concealed carry, Assembly Bill 9, if passed, says the cops can ignore that sign.

But what about you and I and thousands of non-police citizens? We don’t get the special treatment.

We’re not a special class of citizen, get it?

WGO has always opposed Cops-Only Carry, even the federal Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA).

While WGO never encourages businesses or property owners to post their property, we are equally concerned when the police don’t have to heed private property rights … simply because they are the police.

Just look at who’s supporting this legislation: 6 law enforcement organizations (of course) – and just one registered pro-gun group opposed – that’s us.

There has already been a public hearing. And legislators are being led to believe this bill will somehow close a loophole and sync state law up with the federal LEOSA. But that is simply not the case.

What this bill will do, however, is give the police even more power.

It will elevate the cops even further above “ordinary” citizens like you and me.

It will annihilate private property rights and smash the fourth amendment (what’s left of it – all in the name of concealed carry and officer safety)!

With the police state ballooning out of control all around us, is this what we really want?

We don’t think so.

Now, Rep. Kleefish has introduced amendments as a deal being cut to make the bill more acceptable.

But we’re not taking the bait. Assembly Bill 9 needs to be killed right now.

ACTION:

  1. Contact Rep. Kleefish by e-mail here or by calling 888-534-0038 and insist he pull the plug on this legislation. Gun owners do not want Cops-Only Carry, which is simply more excuses to give the police even more power. Gun owners do not support Assembly Bill 9.
  2. Contact your state representative and tell them about AB9 and that gun owners OPPOSE Cops-Only Carry.

It’s extremely important that you take action today. Thanks for your activism.

P.S. – Please chip in something to help us Oppose this massive expansion of police power (all under the guise of “officer safety”). A donation of just $10 or $20 might not seem like much, but believe me when I say it makes a BIG difference providing the resources for this campaign. Thanks.

Amendment 1 rewrites the bill to this:
    175.60 (2g) (a) A licensee or an out-of-state licensee may carry a concealed
5weapon anywhere in this state except as provided under subs. (15m) and (16) and ss.
    6s. 943.13 (1m) (c) and 948.605 (2) (b) 1r.

Due to pressure from WCI this is no longer accurate.

2 amendments to the bill now A) protect private property and remove the permission to ignore signs and b) give permission for any CCL holder to enter school property.

Furthermore if a school posts it would remain a misdemeanor not a felony. with the amendments it is now a decent bill advancing rights

  3. Dave Ehster says:

I see you are opposing Assembly bill 9.

Have you reviewd the amendments of October 10?
