Brown County Bans Concealed Guns From 3 Buildings

| December 22, 2011 | 1 Comment

Brown County to Ban CCW in 3 BuildingsBrown County lawmakers voted Wednesday to ban concealed handguns in three county buildings, but don’t look for metal detectors or special patrols to be added anytime soon.

Concealed carry still will be permitted in several other county buildings, and at special events including the annual county fair.

Signs will be posted prohibiting people from carrying guns in the Brown County Community Treatment Center, the Sophie Beaumont Building (which houses much of the Human Services Department) and the county Shelter Care offices, all in Green Bay. The ban will go into effect once the county has been able to publish the new regulation, a process likely to take at least several days.

Sheriff’s deputies don’t have any immediate plans for aggressive enforcement of the ban, Sheriff John Gossage said shortly after the vote. He said officers currently respond when concerns are raised that someone might have a weapon in the buildings or might plan to bring one, and that the policy won’t change.

Concealed carry will be permitted at two other facilities in Green Bay: the Northern Building — the county’s main office complex and site of the board’s committee meetings — and at the Agriculture and Extension Facility. It also is permitted at special events.

A Wisconsin law that went into effect Nov. 1 allowed individuals with the proper permits to carry concealed weapons in public, though not in locations such as courts and police stations. It gives municipalities and private-property owners the ability to prohibit concealed weapons if certain notices are made to the public. Most communities in northern Brown County have made it illegal to carry concealed weapons into government buildings. Exceptions are Green Bay, which doesn’t restrict concealed-carry. Hobart prohibits it at the village office building. Read more
