2024 Election Report
Are gun rights now safe following a federal-level red wave, or will gun owners still face resistance to meaningful pro-gun reforms?
Update: 8:30 PM 11/13/24 revision on U.S. House results
Madison, Wis.—Following the November 5 elections, the U.S. House of Representatives tipped to Republicans’ favor, cementing a GOP super-majority in Congress that gun owners’ rights groups like Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc. (WGO) will use to repeal numerous federal gun controls.
WGO and a coalition of state- and national-level no-compromise gun rights groups will work with President Trump on an aggressive pro-gun legislative package to restore the Second Amendment and lift onerous federal gun restrictions.
WGO will also push to abolish the ATF, ending the rogue agency’s decades-long persecution of gun owners, gun shows, and gun dealers.
However, the situation in the Wisconsin legislature is a bit more troublesome.
The good news? Despite being the first state election under Gov. Tony Evers’ newly drawn “competitive political maps,” Republicans held onto their majority in the State Assembly.
In the State Senate (where half of the seats were up for grabs in this election), Democrats flipped key seats to reduce Republicans’ majority. Three races were still being counted, but WGO expected Republicans to maintain their majority.
This razor-thin edge will undoubtedly make pro-gun fights in Madison more tenuous.
However, the greatest threat facing gun owners in Wisconsin will be lukewarm Republicans, many of whom did not return WGO’s Candidate Survey, leaving many gun owners to ask, “What anti-gun views are they hiding?”
WGO continues to warn gun owners that Wisconsin Republicans will be tempted to “cut deals” on anti-gun schemes, including state-level red-flag gun confiscations.
This threat level is magnified by Republicans’ victory in Congress, which many gun owners will take as a false sense of security here at the state level, not realizing that the primary danger comes from incremental losses in the Wisconsin legislature.
For example, in the coming session in Madison, WGO expects to see the following bills introduced:
• Red-flag gun confiscations (so-called Extreme Risk Protection Orders
• State-level ban on private gun sales
• Massive expansion of state-level background checks (including your private medical records)
• Background checks for ammo purchases
• Mass surveillance of gun owners
• Draconian regulation and shutting down gun shows
• “See a shrink, lose your guns” schemes
• And more
The greatest danger now to gun rights is gun owners letting down their guard since most gun control is passed incrementally and with the blessings of both parties.
This often occurs during late-night sessions, when many gun owners are asleep, and the media has left the chambers.
It underscores the drastic need for a no-compromise gun rights organization like WGO to keep these state politicians under close observation.
