WGO Leads Concealed Carry Media Blast

| February 7, 2011 | 9 Comments

Gov. Scott Walker has expressed support for a law, and a Republican majority in both houses of the state Legislature strengthens the likelihood a bill would advance to his desk.

Concealed carry bills advanced past the Legislature two times previously, only to fall to former Gov. Jim Doyle’s veto pen.

Corey Graff of Waupaca, executive director of Wisconsin Gun Owners Inc., said that despite changes favorable to his cause, he’s not sitting back comfortably and waiting.

“It’s not just a question of when,” he said. “It’s also a question of whether it will be a good bill that respects gun owner rights or a bad bill that creates more gun restrictions and does more harm than good.”

The impact of the November election on the political landscape in Madison left those on both sides of the issue with little doubt that a bill addressing concealed carry will emerge at some point this year.

There’s no timeline on when a bill will emerge.

Walker noted his support along the campaign trail.

“The right to protect ourselves is just that — our right — and it shouldn’t be eroded for political gain,” Walker says on his campaign website. “I support the right of law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed firearm.”

Graff said his foremost concern is freedom. He said the issue comes down to gun owners getting the rights they were guaranteed in the Constitution. He, like Clark, wants a law that doesn’t require a permit to carry a gun a person was legally able to purchase.

Reporters don’t need a license to exercise freedom of the press and people don’t need to undergo background checks to attend the churches of their choice, Graff said.

“Likewise, the right to bear arms is an inalienable right,” he said.  Read More

A good conceal carry law should not be rushed. Other states’ laws should be examined and studied for their good and faults first. We are among the last of the Mohicans to finally be able to get a conceal law in WI.
Let’s see what others did successfully. We want to make sure it’s written right and tight the first time.

  2. Dan Cramer says:

I most strongly agree, Wisconsin’s time to uphold its citizen’s Second Amendment rights is now, and there is no reason what-so-ever that it shouldn’t be in the form of a Constitutional Concealed Carry bill.

Those who worry about the wrong people getting a hold of a gun without checks, permits, licenses, etc. in place are worrying about the wrong thing. The wrong people get a hold of guns anyway, whether they hold a permit or not!

What we need to worry about is the court system doing the right thing by bringing those who abuse their right to own a gun to quick and firm justice.

Citizens of Wisconsin should be contacting their representatives now and asking not only that a concealed carry law be passed, but a CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY law!

  3. Scott Brown says:

What concerns me is the lack of an apparent plan to mave legislation forward. I have repeatedly contacted my representatives in Madison and it is clear that they are otherwise occupied for some time to come. Can they not walk and chew gum at the same time? When will action begin? When will we see someone in the legislature step up and lead on this? Frankly, I don’t trust them!

  4. George says:

    And you have good reason.

  5. Jordan says:

What gets me, is that we are finding ourselves fighting not for something new, but fighting to keep a right that our forfathers gave to us. Its sad, but I know people who are against it because the “don’t feel safe”. Well the media can tear and tear saying that guns kill people and are a problem, but mark my words, not only will the put their foot in their mouth after it passes, but crime will plummet as a result of giving us back our original constitutional right.

  6. gene willis says:

aslso, this right to carry must be set instone so no othere polititions can change it to suit there political ajenda.laws have been changed befor on political pressures,so this conceal carry can be in jeopardy if not entumbed the right way.we voted over 12 and a hlf years ago to carry and the wrong political machine took our rights away.make this our constitutional right and not the police or the political appointies.long live our collective rights to protect and defend.if not,god help us all.

  7. Todd Hoffman says:

They better realize that they have support from the Right. As we just showed them by reelecting Prosser. Or people like me are going to stop voting for them.

  8. Leroy says:

By passing Database Carry, Wisconsin Republicans expose themselves as hypocrites.

We oppose efforts to restrict the ownership, manufacture, carry, or sale of firearms by law-abiding citizens.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Republican Party of Wisconsin, in convention assembled, opposes any efforts to restrict gun ownership by imposing taxes or fees on guns or ammunition or gun licenses and opposes any other underhanded attempts by government to undermine our 2nd Amendment rights.

  9. hate to say I have pat with my Glock 40 cal. so I am selling it on armslist.com milwaukee. This gun is the perfect self-defense gun, especially for open carry – but the fact that I am selling it online shows how silly the laws are in this state. I am a good judge of character and I will follow the laws to the letter when selling it, but the fact of the matter is that this system is completely reliant on the purchaser telling the truth. I am selling the gun because I lost my job, not because I want to, and I am selling it privately because I am legally allowed to do so, but I don’t believe I should be.
