Evers Veto Is Not the End of the Line for Second Amendment Sanctuary in Wisconsin

| July 13, 2021 | 0 Comments

Gov. Tony Evers and Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes taking their oaths to the people of Wisconsin.

Madison, Wis. — On Friday, July 9, Governor Evers vetoed AB293/2A Sanctuary, but Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc. (WGO) has assured its members that the battle is not over. WGO says that they will not settle for anything less than exhausting all options and that this is not the time to throw our hands up in frustration.

What Happened?

Thursday, July 8, 2021, AB293 was delivered to the Governor’s desk.

On Friday, July 9, 2021, the Governor vetoed the bill.

Governor Evers had the chance to do the right thing and chose party politics over the people’s rights. But, this does not mean we stop.

Evers’ flimsy and transparent partisan veto was executed under the pretense of, “The bill is unconstitutional because it usurps federal authority.” But, WGO has debunked this theory and already addressed why it is Constitutional in past alerts.

Governor Evers has a checkered history on issues of state versus federal power. He refused federal help as Kenosha burned and riots raged in the streets. Out of one side of his mouth, Evers decried President Donald Trump as a dictator for contemplating the use of federal troops to quell the violence. He and the DNC supported crowdfunding to bail out violent protestors, so they could continue to harm the citizens.

Out of the other side of his mouth, Evers has pushed for many laws that exercise state power over federal authority during the Trump administration. He praises federal power as long as it is his party in control and suits his agenda.

By claiming that state-level protections for gun owners are “unconstitutional,” Evers essentially argues against the state government itself. What’s the point of having a state government at all?

Not only that, Evers is a big proponent of education. Would he view pro-education initiatives at the state level as “unconstitutional” if they didn’t align with the federal level?

Anti-states’ rights people always claim that the U.S. Commerce Clause gives the feds permission to run roughshod over gun owners.

However, they forget about the Tenth Amendment:

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

What Next?

Though Governor Evers vetoed the bill, Republicans can call a special session of the legislature to override the Governor’s veto via a two-thirds majority vote, what we call a veto override.

That means this political fight is far from over, and we need to double down on our support for this bill.

And, though the Republican party has embraced the mantle of 2A defense, Chris Kapenga and Robin Vos have not lifted a finger to call a special session of the legislature. At least not yet.

And they may not do so unless they hear from gun owners and feel the heat!

We must call for a veto override vote, and we need legislative leadership — currently, the majority is under Republican control — to stand with us. We need Republicans to help us put pressure on Democrat legislators to see reason. Wisconsinites overwhelmingly want their 2A rights protected and principle over politics.

That is why Republican leaders Robin Vos and Chris Kapenga need to get off their duffs and get to work for our gun rights—NOW! We have provided links to them below, as well as a pre-written letter.

2A Sanctuary is too essential, and we must do all in our power to attempt to see it passed.

Thank You for your hard work and dedication.

ACTION.

———————————————–PRE-WRITTEN LETTER———————————————-

Dear Republican leadership,

Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc. (WGO) has brought to my attention that Governor Evers has vetoed AB293, aka Second Amendment Sanctuary.

The actions of the Governor to fail to protect our rights while openly supporting riots last year and refusing federal help speaks volumes about what this is about — toxic party politics — not

constitutionality or We the People democratic principles. That is why I hope calmer and saner heads will prevail and that the legislature will call an immediate special session for a veto override vote.

2A Sanctuary will afford Wisconsin residents essential protections and remove any resources, personnel, and financial assistance to enforce unconstitutional gun control. It will provide recourse for our state to protect its citizens and law-abiding gun owners from federal overreach and harassment. It would punish any law enforcement, federal or state, that attempts to enforce these illegal and unconstitutional laws. It would uphold Section 25 of the Wisconsin Constitution and the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

What the Governor does not understand is that the average Wisconsin citizen wants this protection. The protections it affords to our state are imperative in these uncertain times. While Evers is willing to play partisan party politics with our lives, I hope you are not.

So again, please call a special session of the legislature and override Governor Evers’ irresponsible veto of these much-needed protections.

Lastly, please inform Thomas Leager of Wisconsin Gun Owners, Inc. on when you schedule that veto override vote. WGO will keep me informed on this issue.

Thank You.

Sincerely,

WGO works for grassroots gun owners, not politicians. While many gun lobbies fight for “reasonable gun control,” WGO sets a higher standard: We oppose all gun control — regardless of the political party — and work tirelessly to restore the Second Amendment. WGO has angered many politicians who would like people to believe that they support gun rights — even when they vote against them. Click here
